Detroit had just declared
bankruptcy. They could no longer support the Zoo.
In the middle of one of the worst recessions in history,
the Detroit Zoo needed the community to save it.

At a time when so many had lost jobs and income, we had to convince a community that the Detroit Zoo was worth saving. It was all coming down to a vote. The Zoo needed all three counties to vote yes on a millage that would increase their taxes. So we put on our political hats, went door-to-door and front lawn to front lawn with endearing lawn signs, direct mail and broadcast. Ultimately, the public voted yes-by an incredible 80%.

And the beloved lawn signs stayed in front yards for months after the election.

We also enlisted the help of those who would be most impacted by the loss. The kids.
